There are a variety of circumstances occasioning the use of medication. Patients may come
- after discharge from an inpatient psychiatric unit or rehabilitation facility
- while they are enrolled in an intensive outpatient program
- while in therapy with a different provider
- while involved in group therapy or self-help groups.
Before prescribing any medication, a complete picture of the patient must first be developed. This evaluation includes a thorough assessment of a patient’s symptom history and any medications previously prescribed. I work closely with other providers to gain a broad, holistic appreciation of the patient’s history, current needs, and target symptoms to inform medication choices and develop a plan of how medications may help. Some patients may find sufficient relief from medications alone, while others may need to combine this treatment option with additional treatment modalities. Informed decision-making is critical, as there may be multiple medications available to address each symptom or disorder. Therefore, a discussion of the risks and benefits of each option is important to determine a medication or medication plan that will best address the specific symptoms and needs of a patient. This inclusive and collaborative process is designed to enable and encourage a patient to have trust in the process, and hope that their symptoms may be relieved and their lives improved.
